Erin Morgenstern the Queen of what I am now calling "Dark Whimsy".

The story of The Starless Sea is fantastical and magical in a way that is reminiscent of Alice and Wonderland, but much less like a fairytale.
There's a darkness to this story and this world that makes it more suitable for adults. As well as the story being incredibly intricate and the connections between the different story elements being very impressive.

Yet despite all that praise, I can't say that I loved this book. And I'd say that the whimsical element that makes Morgenstern's writing so unique, is personally for me also the downfall of this book.
Because by the end of it, I kinda felt like "what did I just read". After all these nearly 500 pages I felt like there was no point to this story, to everything that happened with all these characters. It all just felt like I had experienced a story which was missing part of its plot.

This book is an experience to read and the creativity is off the chart. But after a while I just felt kind of lost within its pages. Never knowing where we were going to go or what the point was. And the fact none of that got resolved in the end made me feel let down by the overall story.

I do think I would be willing to try another story by Erin Morgenstern. After all I really did like The Night Circus. But this story and I didn't really click. I like my whimsy, but I need it to be connected to an actual plot, and not replace it.
