Convenience Store Woman
by Sayaka Murata
An interesting (and weird) take on conforming to social norms because the world would rather see a person lie to themselves and be miserable than let them be whoever they want to be.
It might be dark and annoying, but it's a common scenario, especially for Asian women. Everything about the way Keiko's friends, as well as her sister, treated her makes me sick, but I guess the overall point of the book was to make the reader feel uncomfortable.
Brilliant writing + narration.
