Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop
by Hwang Bo-Reum
This book was calming to read, and I loved how slow it was. I would have rated it four stars if it didn’t occasionally venture into talking about societal or structural issues it did not have the breadth or rigour to handle like gentrification or labour exploitation, and if it didn’t so frequently give generalised non-lessons like “you have to give up your dream to be happy” but also “pursuing your dream can bring happiness even if you cannot achieve it”, so in conclusion “it depends”. I would have preferred if the author did not try to pass across lessons through dialogues but rather showed readers how to live authentically through the characters’ stories.
