Horse Barbie by Geena Rocero

5.0

I don’t typically rate memoirs and nonfiction unless they’re really, really bad or anywhere near great. I think most people’s stories are worth telling, even if they’re not something I resonate with. I don’t think every memoir has to be for everyone.

This memoir, however, is for everyone. Not only does Geena hit on so many of her identities that we get race talks, sexuality talks, gender identity talks, religious identity talks, and more all in one — but she does it in a way that even if you don’t fit into ANY of those categories with her, you’re taking something from it. I learned historical facts about South Asian linguistics and now have new cities added to my travel bucket list for gosh sake. It’s also just so incredibly well written.

I didn’t know much, if anything, about Geena Rocero (or “Horse Barbie,” as she’s known to the Philippines from her pageant days) going into this, but I’m truly so inspired by her now in so many ways. This is up there with the best memoirs I’ve ever read.
