It's nice to read a novelization that expands on a TV series with extra time to delve into subplots and characterization that must be glossed over in a short telefilm. Baxter does a good job of showing us some of these extras. Baxter also adds some compelling 21st-Century science into the story, science that would have been unimaginable in the 1960s when the original second Doctor was broadcast. There are also some nifty aliens that would have been impossible to convincingly create on screen in the 1960s (they might be tough to do now, actually).
