Thud! by Terry Pratchett
5.0
Pretty much perfection: no slow bits, no dud jokes, Sybil gets to finally take some names, Vimes almost "goes spare" (actually, it's really interesting to read this in the light of "The Truth" and "Going Postal" with their insights into Vimes' character as seen by other people) and there's some magnificent commentary on what's happening in our cities as a reflection of the wider world and historical events. Not to mention, "Where's My Cow?"
