The Last Unicorn
by Peter S. Beagle
I really liked this, though i imagine I would've enjoyed it more without the fifty years of reputation that go along with it.
But it's a very funny and beautiful and sort of sad novel about magic and identity.
It begins like a fairytale but gradually transforms into a much more developed and emotional kind of story. It's also extremely surreal in ways you don't often see in fantasy novels. The setting has a sort of evolution that's both bizarre and extremely satisfying.
Great stuff. Had I read it as a kid, it would probably be a lifelong favorite.
Also, the novella accompanying the novel is great. It's a beautiful little addendum to the story of the characters in the novel, but it also introduces a fantastic little girl who narrates all that happens. It captures life through a child's lens so perfectly it almost hurts.
