Fable by Adrienne Young

5.0

The slow burn romance and tension…
Found family…
The longing for love and acceptance after being devoid of it for so long…

I FINALLY picked up this hIghly recommended YA fantasy a couple weeks ago. It took me a bit longer to read than I expected, but once I had uninterrupted time to read(AKA a 4 hour plane ride!), I gobbled the rest of the story up!

No one really makes it off Jeval. But that’s what Fable wants most—-getting off the island and finding her father Saint, to claim her rightful place in his crew.

Compared to other fantasy books I’ve read, it’s more character driven. It’s certainly not without exciting moments or action sequences, but it’s a beautiful exploration of purpose, family, and realizing what you really want. Fable has spent so much time being on guard and not trusting others in order to survive. It’s not solely focused on some huge end goal of a quest, it also matters what Fable is gaining along the way. I loved seeing her character develop! There’s plenty of Heavy hitting emotional scenes in a world where any kind of vulnerability is dangerous.

I also surpassingly loved the romance! Romantic plots in fantasy books aren’t usually what I love the most about them, especially in YA. It was swoony and slow burn and so so lovely. Another thing that stood out is that it’s pretty low-fantasy. Fable may be a good choice if you’re just getting into fantasy or want more focus on a world, characters, or adventure than the magic. Although not as dark and graphic, It gave me similar vibes to Six of Crows—-a ragtag crew and ever rising stakes, romance full of yearning, a harsh and demanding world.

Also it ends on a cliffhanger!!!! I NEED the sequel STAT. But it’s too close to the school year starting. I’m not sure if I could afford to get caught up in another fantasy. In the meantime, drop me some more seafaring/piratey books (doesn’t have to be strictly fantasy) or books with magic focused on water or gems/stones.
