Nothing To Fear by Karen Rose

4.0

Full disclosure: I read the abridged version of this book, unfortunately, because it’s the only version of the audiobook that appears to exist. So there’s undoubtedly a lot of nuance I missed out on, but I did get the gist of the story. First things first, I loved the story and plot development. Some really cool twists and a really clever and ruthless villain that keeps you locked in all the way through.

Where this one fell a little short for me was in the chemistry of the two leads. It just seemed too “love at first sight” and there never really seemed to be a believable reason for the attraction. Additionally, while I liked Dana’s character, Ethan’s seemed to be a little more lacking in substance than I’m used to seeing in Rose’s books.

That being said, the side characters in the story more than made up for any of my tiny quibbles. I loved the defiance in Evie, and I was thrilled to finally get Alec’s backstory that I’ve seen referenced in so many later books. I’ve read the entire Baltimore series as of now, and this book dovetails with series in spectacular ways. Karen Rose is a freaking mastermind at creating a whole criminal justice universe spanning across decades. I’m blown away.
