Soulless
by Gail Carriger
I enjoyed this book a great deal. It is a fun, light read, but the story takes place in an interesting variation on Victorian England, in which vampires and werewolves exist. But so do the preternaturals or "soulless." Alexia Tarabotti is soulless. What does that mean for her? It's hard to explain, and in fact, the character and those around her (even those who are aware of her condition), don't seem to know exactly what this means. Which does allow the reader to take a bit of the journey with her.
Alexia has a brain, a backbone, and a wicked tongue, and is unafraid to use any or all of the above. As such, she's a poor fit in Victorian society in many ways, but she is who she is.
