Love After Love by Ingrid Persaud

Maybe I need to just take a break from literary fiction until the pandemic is over, because bleak books are not enjoyable to me at all. I can tell this was well-crafted and it should have drawn me in, but my main emotion was dread every time I picked this up.

That said -- I think the blurb on this pitches it as suspenseful, and it's really not. All of the "secrets" are revealed early on to the reader, and shortly thereafter to most of the relevant characters. It was therefore the characters and the hope of happy endings that kept me reading. As it became clear that things would just get worse and worse, it became more and more of a chore to read. Also, there were explicit descriptions of self-harm, so I skipped large sections that dealt with that.
