Has Stephen King ever considered writing novellas? Or at least something under 4 million pages? Oof.
This is an incredible story from start to finish. It starts in 2010 with Jake Epping who discovers through his friend, Al that runs the local diner, that there is a time travel doorway of sorts in his restaurant. When you step through the portal, it takes you back to 1958 every single time. Al had tried to go back in time to stop the Kennedy assassination, but wasn’t able to go through with his mission. He tells Jake and finally convinces him to go back in time and finish what Al couldn’t.
This book was beyond richly detailed. Every setting, smell, sound, thought, etc. was fully expounded on by King. At times it got a smidge tedious and I found myself wishing it was a solid 50 pages shorter.
The best part about this book was lunging to pause the audiobook so Will and I could discuss. Whether it was predicting what would happen next, trying to figure out how a certain thing would be possible in time travel, or just plain old wishing that Jake would shut up already, we had the best time figuring this book out.
I also loved all of the great side characters that are introduced. They are what gives heart to this story and make it so much more than a time travel/history book.
If you have the hand strength to actually lift this chonk of a book up, then you should for sure give it a read.
