I liked the first half of this book, but the second half really went downhill for me. Not that any of the story was exactly “realistic” but it started to feel like even more of a stretch by the end. Also, the story just fell flat. Here was this super secret society that knows everything about its members and controls their every move, but then you find out “oh actually some members went off the rails and we didn’t know that they were doing those things, sorry about that” What? It just didn’t add up.
Also, the writing was a little redundant. And even though this was written from the point of view of the husband, it was so clearly written by a woman. The way Jake talked about Alice and constantly praised her felt a little gratuitous.
Finally, (while trying not to spoil the book) why in the world didn’t they just follow the road out at the end of the book instead of walking across miles of desert???
