Early Departures by Justin A. Reynolds

3.0

Reading this book has evoked similar feelings in me as when I read They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. You think you know, going into it, that you can handle any emotional turmoil... because the ending has essentially been spoiled for you by the title or jacket description alone. However, you'll still find yourself gripped by feelings of sadness and grief. It's not just that you become attached to the characters themselves, but that you can relate this story of loss to just about anyone in your life. Who would you bring back if you had the chance, even if it was for a brief time? Who do you miss so desperately since they've been gone?

I surprised myself with how emotional I became once I reached the end. I didn't full on cry (most of my friends know that I love a good "cry book"), but I'd recommend other readers be prepared before jumping into Early Departures. It will certainly evoke an emotional response, and a nostalgia for friendships (and other relationships) from long ago.

PS: what does YOUR library label this book as, genre-wise? Mine says Fantasy, but I am really unsure if I agree.
