Carissa Broadbent has become a firm favourite of mine, so I was very eager to read this! I never read these books when they were independently published so I went in with no knowledge of the characters or world.
This was a very interesting book. I had moments I really loved in this, scenes I thought were really well written. I loved the FMC, and thought she was well written, particularly her journey from freeing herself to where she is at the end of the book. I loved the side characters and some of the scenes we got.
However, I do have a few minor issues:
- The worldbuilding is sparse. There’s no mention of histories between different countries, why there’s wars and so on. There’s a lack of information on the culture, weather etc on these countries.
- The romance feels a little lacklustre to me, and it seems to move so fast.
- There’s a scene where they acknowledge that six months have passed since the beginning of the book and I was very confused because I didn’t feel like that was written well enough to show that six months have passed.
Despite that, I found this to be an entertaining read. It kept my attention up to the end of the book. I do recommend it for fans of Carissa Broadbent’s other work, and those who love fantasy novels with a great FMC.
