Heart: A History by Sandeep Jauhar

4.0

Heart: A History, is a brilliant and illuminating book by Indian-American cardiologist Sandeep Jauhar.

He weaves together medical history, personal stories, and clinical insight into an engaging narrative. He maps out not only how we've come to understand the physical heart, but also how it continues to define our emotional and cultural lives.

Interspersed with the history of the development of various therapies for heart disease is his personal anecdotes which are both humerous and emotional at the same time.

Special mention for the chapter on heart transplantation (Chapter 11: Replacement Parts), which is beautifully written and extremely moving.

What sets this book apart is Jauhar’s honesty. As a doctor, he doesn’t hide his doubts, fears, or the messy imperfections of medicine. The blend of science and story feels effortless.

For lovers of medicine, memoirs, compelling nonfiction or anyone who finds the human body as fascinating as the human spirit, this book is a must-read.
