Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka
3.0

The information in this book is wonderful, especially if you happen to have a "spirited" child, and if you don't it's still pretty good information. I feel fairly confidant in saying that I have two very "spunky" children and the jury is still out on the baby. I feel like after reading this I am better equipped to handle their "spunky" and borderline "spirited" moments (as well as the "spirited" moments that my even-tempered daughter occasionally has) and I think I've had some positive paradigm shifts on what I previously viewed as less than desirable traits.

My problem with this book is that it was over 450 pages long. If every single one of these pages were necessary that would have been fine (still arduous, nonetheless) but it really could have been done in about 150. Most of the book was made up of personal stories of the people who attend the authors parenting courses. For some, I realize, this would be comforting. I'm sure it's nice for parents who feel embarrassed or alone in their troubles to be able to realize, "Oh, good, I'm not the only one!" For me, in the beginning, I thought, "Hmmm, this isn't me, and how very glad I am that it's not. I used to think my kids were difficult but really it could be so much worse," and then I started to think, "I might not mind all of these little stories if I new these people personally," and then, "This is getting ridiculous..." and then I started skipping paragraphs that began with quotations which comprised the majority of the paragraphs. I don't think I lost anything from the skipping- I was still able to glean everything helpful that I think I could get from this book. I can certainly say that this book is very thorough and gives copious examples (if that's what you're into).

Despite my 3 star rating- Highly recommended- read it in whatever fashion you find most helpful:)
