Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo
4.0

This novel about a messy family is 512 pages long. To me, that's too long, but I don't think there was anything I'd take out. So, it was all essential and very well written. The central character is Julia Ames, a late middle age woman, who is ambivalent about motherhood (ambivalent about most people), has had an affair, has a fraught relationship with her mother (hasn't seen her in 17 years), so...unlikeable. Except I really related to her. When I wasn't reading the book that was sort of fine, and I never felt like "I should pick that back up" but when I did, I was totally immersed.
