Here With Me by Samantha Young

5.0

When Robyn–a former cop experiences a traumatic event it pushes her to deal with a pain from the past that influences the way she moves through life to this day–the abandonment by her Scottish father, Mac Galbraith.

In her quest to find answers and heal, she goes to Ardnoch to see her father. When reconnecting with her father she meets Lachlan Adair–a man she resents. While there she finds that crimes have been occurring and her father is now a target. She becomes determined to find answers and keep Mac safe. Even if it means spending time with Lachlan–making their growing admiration undeniable and attraction explosive.

Robyn is such a strong character in more ways than one. She has a life-changing moment that she is still coming to grips with and despite the gravity of the situation, it spurs her to get the answers she needs from her father in her quest to heal. I enjoyed the banter between Lachlan and Robyn because I don’t think he is used to going up against many people, but that is just the person she is. She tells it how it is and doesn’t avoid situations, but deals with them. It’s why she is in Scotland in the first place – being strong and putting herself first and not secondary to being there for others.

Lachlan is the type of person you know has entered the room even with your back to them. There is just an aura around him. He has the say and is caught off guard when he meets Robyn. He’s attracted, but that comes with complications – in more ways than one. I enjoyed learning what makes him tick and close off as a means of self-preservation.

Like many of Samantha Young's novels, the setting of Scotland is as much a part of the story as the characters themselves. She has an indisputable way of making the setting a living entity and not just a backdrop. I find her writing style to be engaging – switching between character- and plot-driven scenes with beautiful descriptions of the surroundings. The complexity of the characters as well as the rising stakes of the crimes made this an enjoyable and suspenseful read that I recommend.
