The Stolen Heir by Holly Black

5.0

I am SCREAMING at that ending! exCUSE ME Holly Black, how dare you?

I have so so many thoughts tumbling around in my brain but I’ll try to make sense of them.

I was a little hesitant when going into this book as I adored The Cruel Prince trilogy, and wasn’t all that enamoured by the idea of the characters in The Stolen Heir or the direction of the story in general.

Oh boy how wrong I was. Suren? I’m obsessed. She’s timid yet feral, full of reluctant hope and desperate for someone to really see her and love her. She’s also pretty badass and a ridiculously strong character - I ended up loving that the entire book was from her perspective.

Now don’t get me started on Oak… Holly Black’s ability to yo-yo a reader’s opinion is outstanding. I can’t count how many times I was back and forth on him, absolutely sure one minute of his intentions and character, then questioning EVERYTHING a couple of pages later.

I reckon the majority of this book is a solid four stars, but the last 1/5th had me in a state of near hysteria. The big reveal I was able to figure out a lot earlier than I’m sure Black was hoping for (I’m an experienced reader so I’m a tough one to pull the wool over) but I’m pleased to admit there were a few twists I didn’t see coming and it was a JOY to be thrown so completely off kilter.

All in all, this was a fantastic read and I simply cannot wait to find out what happens next! *round of applause*
