Freedom: Memories 1954 – 2021 by Angela Merkel
4.0
A few attempts at reading between the lines suggested to me Chancellor Merkel's views on other states and heads of state:
* G.W. Bush: Likable and unpretentious, raised with every privilege and completely uninterested in attempting the hard work of acquiring the knowledge requsit for the task of personally engaging in productive discussions.
* V. Putin: Bully and narcissistic upstart oligarchic and fascist whose ego misleads him toward activities where the calculation of risk endangers people other than himself, and who has the political objectives of reforming the geopolitical borders of the USSR and leading a country perceived as one of the global centres of power.
* Israel: Germany's fault for which Germany must make continue to make amends and remain perpetually blinkered on counts of genocide committed by Israel against Palestinians, though perhaps a light tap on the wrist may be warranted for expanding settler occupation so long as the situation remains clearly portrayed in the following light: criticism of Israel being antisemitic and discussion of Palestine being portrayed through the lens of terrorism.
* Scientific literacy of heads of state: Woefully lacking to the point of willful ignorance.
* The press: An absolute cornerstone of society, but which nevertheless acts opportunistically and without much forethought to undermine political processes by taking photos and quotes out of context.
* Europe: An inclusive patchwork made stronger by cooperation.
* D.Trump: An unscrupulous, zero-sum-thinking real-estate tycoon who aspires to fascism, makes every attempt to leverage guilt in dialogue, but (almost incredibly) wants people to genuinely like him. A danger to global stability and Europe in particular.
