The Lost Vintage
by Ann Mah
This was a bit of a surprise for me, for this book started out slow and I didn't feel connected to any of the characters initially. But then, a big family secret is revealed that peaked my interest and then I could simply not put this book down.
This is about a girl named Kate, who visits her family's vineyard in France to help a school friend of hers who happens to be married to Kate's cousin, clear out the basement of the family's home--all to reveal a secret room and a treasure trove of vintage wine bottles! In addition, Kate finds out about Helene, a family member she knew nothing about who had a mysterious and somewhat dark past. Hearing Helene's journal entries during the occupation during World War II in France was beyond fascinating for me and left me wanting to read more and more about her as the pages flew by.
Kate's love story with Jean-Luc, although not as predictable, was still kinda meh and one of the reasons for my 4 star rating. It just didn't capture me the way I felt it could have, although when they finally did it again, I was a bit touched.
Overall, a well written novel about Burgandy, France albeit a slow initial start. Recommended.
