One Summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson
4.0

I have enjoyed Bryson in the past, and I did again here!

This is a great look at just a few months of American history, and I think Bryson did a fantastic job of not only saying what amazing things were going on, but also in putting those events into meaningful context. I loved that the author chose some events that are not remembered today (such as the murder by Snyder that was a huge deal that summer) as well as the obvious (Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic). These "less historically significant" events were perfect for demonstrating the mood of the country and of the world, giving a representation of the atmosphere where "more significant" events were taking place.

I've never particularly loved history, but was actually able to dip in and out of this story with ease as Bryson does a great job of reminding the reader about names and dates already brought up: "[event A]... which was happening just hours before Lindbergh..." and "...who was the man in charge of [that thing I talked about two chapters ago]".

I was actually astonished at the number of events that happened that summer--it almost felt planned or fake to have everything on such a turning point/at a peak!
Totally recommend to anyone interested in: history, Babe Ruth, Charles Lindbergh, or Bryson's humor.
