I understand the hype. As a hockey lover, I was pleased with how much the sport was intertwined with the story. But really, hockey didn’t need to be part of the story at all. It was never about the sport. Backman simply found an ingenious way to illustrate the vile effects of rape culture and patriarchy. The story touched on so many experiences, while never feeling as though things were just thrown in for no reason, making it incredibly well-rounded.
