This book broke me. And is not really what it says on the tin. This was supposed to be a humorous story told from the perspective of a Labrador, who are the one breed still loyal to the Pact to protect their families no matter what. What you get is a fairly dark and depressing tale (with an even more depressing ending) and, while witty in places, not exactly humorous. I spoiled myself for the end when I snuck a peek at the total number of pages, so maybe that made it feel more depressing than it was, but I had expected still some sort of… resolution? I generally really enjoy Matt Haig’s books, having read a few of them now, but this one was a self-inflicted stab to the heart.
