The Lola Quartet by Emily St. John Mandel
5.0

Not really a mystery or a missing-person book, because readers find out what happened long before the "investigator" does. But I don't think that was the point of the book. It was more of a reflection on memory and how your past is always following you, I guess? Which, I will admit, sounds like kind of a snooze-fest, but honestly it was so good. I found myself thinking about it constantly. Like, I was laying in bed at 4 am thinking about why the author chose a particular word instead of a different one and what it meant for the themes of the story. And I'm not usually that kind of reader, I'm here purely for enjoyment, not for Language Arts class. I also loved how atmospheric this book was (also not usually something I am thinking hard enough to notice).

I'm really struggling to write this review because the book was really well-written, and my reading and reviewing feels very low-brow in comparison. But maybe the fact that this book appealed to me, someone who only reads for fun and not for "well-written", but it was also well-written in a book award/Language Arts class kind of way is its own commendation?
