The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith
3.0

I enjoyed this book, but I think it has a big problem, and that is its marketing. All of the marketing of this novel (incuding on the book itself) says that this is a thriller full of twists. However, that's not what this book is at all. There are zero twists, and I wouldn't even call it a thriller. True, there's a crime that needs to be solved, but that's not really what the book is about.

The book is about the character of Cormoran Strike, and I really enjoyed everything that had to do with him. This is a character study of this man: who he is, why he is that way, how his relationships with other people work, what makes him tick. As I said, I really liked this part, and I thought it was beautifully written, and that's why I gave the book three stars.

However, the mystery part of the story is really badly done. You see all of the interviews, but you never get clues. You get all the information that the characters are telling you, but nothing is striking, so you never suspect anyone, because you don't have the clues to do so.  The crime is solved with a massive infodump, and that's it. There are several instances of the story where you get something along the lines of "Cormoran had a theory" and then he never shares his theory. So, again, it's impossible for the reader to be invested in the crime because we never know what is relevant information (and this is not on the readers, the information is really not in the text).

Anyway, as I said, I would recommend this book, but you should know what you're really getting into. If you're looking for a thriller, this is not a book for you. I will be continuing with the series, hoping that the second one is better.
