This ended up as a light adventure-dystopia-sci-fi young adult novel, though it's not a bad thing, I like how optimistic this duology turns out. I mean, I've read depressing emotionally overwhelming books such as Marie Lu's books and when somebody gives me this kind of book I always expect the worst of the worst. Whatever bad things you can think of, prepare as if it's going to happen because most of the time it will.
But not this book.
I will not say it's disappointing, to be frank this duology is a breath of fresh air for me. The more I think about it the more I think that I actually enjoyed this book. It's about survival, about humanity, about acceptance and morals. It throws questions regarding morals which I think is fitting for teenagers, especially since we are too used to knowing fictional stories where killing for necessity is normal.
In most cases, I hate the idealists in any stories. I hate them with passion. I mean, I do understand their point of view and their effort to do what's best for everyone, but it's just irritating for me. They are often delusional, messed up in the head, and too self-righteous for their own good. Which is why Vicious by V.E. Schwab works better for me, because I can relate myself to the anti-heroes and villains more than I do to idealist protagonists.
Callum, though, I can't seem to hate him. I do find him irritating at times, but he's charming and bright and optimistic that it's hard to feel anything hostile for him. Like Wren, I feel like I'm drawn to that positivity. Like Wren, it makes me feel safe and accepted. Callum is annoying and stubborn, but man he's too forgiving, sometimes it makes me feel sappy.
I like that I can relate to Wren. She's smart, strong, but she's not expressive, which is why she's attracted to Callum at all, I think. Because Callum accepts that and it's as if he just thinks the terrifying Wren is funny.
Anyway, this was a good read. The first chapters of the second book made me so angry I saw red lmao I hate Micah because he's just insane and self-righteous it's making me sick. I can't say the ending was satisfying but I appreciated happy endings once in awhile SOOOOO thank you, Ms. Amy.
