My Government Means to Kill Me by Rasheed Newson
challenging
dark
reflective
tense
medium-paced
4.75
This book was fantastic. Here are my raw thoughts - this will all be put into better words later on the booksta:
The pacing, the writing, the subject matter, the main character were all superbly created. The footnotes to explain the cultural references were great, and at times, seemed a bit overdone (esp the name dropping).
However! I wholly enjoyed reading this. Newson clearly is an incredible writer and I would read anything he writes.
This one didn’t WOW me - it didn’t change my perspective or will linger with me for a while- so that’s why I’m leaving 4.75 stars on it instead of 5.
And I would recommend this book to anyone. Similar content to THE GREAT BELIEVERS, but quicker paced and more sociopolitically inclined. The chapter organization by “lessons” learned through Trey’s gap year was fresh and creative. I loved looking back after each chapter and reading the lesson learned again.
So well crafted. Loved it.
