I wanted to like this book, and overall it was okay, but I was so disappointed by the ending.
All of that build up and we’re supposed to just accept that a mixup with an abortion chased a family out of town, burned a home down, and made an underaged girl run away from home? This all seemed too dramatic, while also underwhelming. It would have been more interesting if they had to keep moving to keep the Ryan’s from finding Pearl, and had to leave because Mrs. Richardson was going to expose that secret. I just don’t see why *that* was big enough to force Pearl and Mia to leave in the dead of night.
The writing is beautiful and the story is quite compelling, I couldn’t put the book down, but once I got 3/4 of the way through I realized the story wouldn’t be able to land in a satisfying way. In the end it’s just a teen drama that adults got involved in and made messy.
