Madame Bovary
by Gustave Flaubert
Flaubert has written a masterpiece. He seems to really understand each of his characters. We may not agree with them or respect them, in some cases, we may wish them a nasty carriage accident, but they are all believable, true to who they are. And the narration does not include judgment on any of them, simply shows us a story and allows us to form our own opinion.
As a product of its time, Madame Bovary was scandalous, pornographic, yet survived because it was so well-written, so relatable. Read with a modern view, this book indicts the society without blame to the victims. Lives are lived differently today, but people are still the same.
