first of all, i’m a huge fan of chloe gong and her other books so i was really excited for her first adult fantasy novel. however this is already the second time i picked this up because when i started it for the first time i had to dnf it.
i don’t know what exactly the issue is but i just can’t connect with the story that well - maybe it’s the unfamiliar and confusing worldbuilding or the characters themselves or the plot but somehow this book just wasn’t gripping me most of the time.
but then again, maybe i’ll enjoy the second book more because now i’m already familiar with the world and the characters and i noticed that i liked the last 100 pages way more than the first 200 pages. maybe that’s just because of all the plot twists at the end haha.
also -and this is really unusual for me- the thing i enjoyed the most in this book was the romance. shocking, really but reading about calla and antons tension and obsession and betrayal was just so much fun and definitely elevated the experience of reading this book.
