tsundoku281 's review for:
All My Sons
by Arthur Miller
Just read this play tonight before heading off to Kingston tomorrow to see production!! :) I hope I'll love it!
It was surprisingly short but nonetheless just as shocking and heart wrenching and beautifully written as Salesman ...
Certain lines blew me away , like grief being epitomised by 'we're like at a railroad station waiting for a train that never comes in' and 'I have to pull back because other people will suffer. My whole bloody life' ...
- I instantly warmed to Chris and found his relationship with Ann to be comforting and real yet I could never have anticipated the extent of the family trauma and suppressed secrets (Joe killed 21 pilots with patched up heads, including Larry, his son) --> crafted very well by Miller
- of course, exploration of father-son relationship and its fracturing when placed under immense strain
- I think Miller is brilliant at depicting fathers plagued by particular torments , whether it's depression/verge of insanity in Salesman and guilt/grief in All my Sons. I just find the raw, unashamedly ugly emotion that seeps through every line so compelling <3 will be reading more Miller in the future!
