at first, i didn't like this book too much. monty was pretty whiny, and it felt TOO YA (something i hardly ever say!) in the way he and percy seemed to obvs like each other but they were both too insecure to admit/act on it so they kept miscommunicating/not admitting they cared for each other. but then as monty was faced with more adversary (started with being robbed by bandits), i felt like he became more empathetic and and a more relatable character. overall it was a very fun adventure story with a nice LBTQ leaning. i also enjoyed the way felicity called monty out on how he didn't even realize all the advantages he was reaping from the society's general gender norms at the time (1720s?). i also liked how the 2nd half of the book had more black characters, giving monty at least an entry to start thinking about what racism looked like at that time and all the ways it was having an impact on percy being biracial. after the book ended, the author had a short but illustrative section on some of the main topics in the book (Tours being the start of tourism, race relations, queer culture back then, etc) and all the research she had done, since i was super interested to learn more facts about those topics in that time period. def interested to read the 2nd book from felicity's POV, mostly because she was a smart sassy female and i think her story will be equally fun.
