Last Night in Montreal
by Emily St. John Mandel
3.5 stars, rounded up. Atmospheric and lyrical and compulsively readable; you can see sparks of the same genius that illuminated Station Eleven.
The characters do fall a bit flat for me, though. Lilia in particular flirts with the manic pixie dream girl archetype, one of my least favorite tropes.
That said, I thought the interwoven timelines and the themes of memory and flight and language were particularly well-done; I wouldn't be opposed to re-reading in future to catch more.
