The Labors of Hercules
by Agatha Christie
Hercule Poirot plans to retire, so he takes on 12 final cases mirroring Hercules’ 12 labors–surprise, he doesn’t retire. As a major mythology buff, I was looking forward to seeing how the Queen of Mystery tackled a contemporary (for the time) retelling of the 12 Labors with one of her most famous characters, Hercule Poirot. Unfortunately, I was disappointed; most of the cases felt really forced to fit the prompt, rather than developing naturally into the prompt. Because she wrote 12 short mysteries, none of them felt fully developed. That said, it was still an enjoyable read and I loved the further insight we got to Poirot’s character.
