Shiver by Allie Reynolds
5.0
Wow! I was blown away by Allie Reynolds’ debut novel, SHIVER!
I’m a bit of a #LockedRoomMystery fanatic. I’ve read ONE BY ONE by Ruth Ware and THE SANATORIUM by Sarah Pearse, both of which are set in the Alps. But SHIVER was even better!
Ten years ago, Milla hoped to become one of the UK’s top snowboarders. She spent the season training in Le Rocher, where she met friends and rivals. Foremost among these was Saskia, whom Milla could never quite pin down. Saskia was beautiful, talented, and ruthless. Though Milla could never prove Saskia’s involvement, the other snowboarders seemed to have more accidents when she was around.
Now, Milla has been summoned back to Le Rocher for a reunion with some of the other friends she made years ago. There’s Heather and Dale, a bartender and snowboarder who got together years back and are married now. There’s Brent, the sweet guy Milla had a fling with whose snowboarding career went bust when he turned to the bottle. And there’s Curtis, Saskia’s older brother and Milla’s longtime crush. Everyone agrees to the reunion because 10 years ago, Saskia disappeared. Will the group finally learn what happened to her?
Through flashbacks to the fateful training season, we see just how much pressure these athletes were under. This book is brilliantly plotted and expertly paced. I loved the flashbacks — it was so interesting to read about elite snowboarding. And a welcome change from the usual skiing scenes that come with this genre. This book has a mystery and a will they won’t they romance tied up in one. I was so pleasantly surprised by this book and I would love for anyone reading this review to pick it up!!
