Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1 by G. Willow Wilson

4.0

Have you seen the Ms. Marvel sizzle reel yet? I’ve watched it at least twice now. I am so excited for the upcoming slate of Disney+ Marvel shows. I mean, Kate Bishop and Kamala Khan both gracing my screen? *chef’s kiss* Add in a show for America Chavez, and we would live in a perfect world.

I’ve been a fan of Ms. Marvel’s appearances in other Marvel series (and particularly in Marvel Rising), but I hadn’t read any of her series until now. And what fun it was! For a first volume, No Normal does a pretty good job at setting up Kamala’s world and her origin story. I love the idea of a superhero loving, fanfiction writing girl becoming a superhero in a world already saturated with The Avengers and other Marvel characters. Is this villain of this issue not really established yet and sort of boring? Yes, but I don’t expect it to remain that way. And I’m interested in the tension that’s already being established between Kamala’s superhero responsibilities, her family obligations, and just having to be a friend and student. Basically, I think Ms. Marvel is a series I can’t wait to read more of.
