Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

5.0

This novel is about many things, one of them being cultural appropriation. Intriguingly, the author appears Asian, writes about a white author who is accused of appropriating Chinese culture and the work of a Chinese author. I love what those layers add to the various discussions (always in character and advancing plot) of appropriation. It shows the toxic culture of social media. It is also a critique of the publishing world as well as the conceit of the individual author creating out of nothing. And it is a good read.

I liked June, the main character, though I didn't always agree with her rationalizations. The presentation of Athena kept my feelings changing as different actions were revealed. Other characters were believable enough, though less complex. The plot kept me reading, the pace increasing after the middle (not that it was slow before). I enjoyed being surprised several times, and I couldn't have anticipated the ending. But it was prepared for.

I will read more by this author.
