The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
4.0

Started this expecting the story of a boring privileged man who’s mad because the girl he likes didn’t like him back. To be honest, that’s part of what I got but the romantic element to the novel evolves and transforms this sob story into a novel about human existence and how we operate in society. I especially liked Werther’s speech on suicide and how he despises ‘normal’ people who see suicide as weak and wrong, when they don’t know how a person in this situation feels and how they are operating. Would definitely recommend to fans of the romantic era.
