The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert

5.0

5/5 Stars
Brandy Colbert does it again with her new novel, “The Voting Booth.” I have read three of Colbert’s books previously so I expected this book to be just as amazing as the others, but this book was even more enjoyable than I expected. “The Voting Booth”, is a young adult contemporary that centers around two teenagers, Marva and Duke, who meet in line to vote. Marva has put so much importance on this day that she gets to vote for the first time because she feels very strongly in people using their voice to bring change. Duke has just lost his brother, Julian, who fought as an activist all his life to bring awareness on important issues so he feels as if it’s his duty to his late brother to vote.
I really thought going into to this book that I was going to have a problem with the book being set in one day. I thought I was going to be strongly against the insta love and that the romance wouldn’t be believable, but I absolutely loved it. Even though the two characters did build a romantic relationship within this one day I truly felt that the relationship did grow and develop over time. Marva and Duke did truly get to know each other and actually had real conversations before their relationship began. I really appreciated Brandy Colbert for giving us a developed romance within a day that didn’t even feel like insta love at all.
I enjoyed every aspect of this book from Colbert’s writing to her characters. I really thought both characters were relatable and felt very authentic. Marva and Duke weren’t perfect but that’s how they felt human to me. I admired Marva’s dedication and passion towards voting and people using their voice. I loved how I really got to saw how Julian’s death affected Duke and how he is still dealing with it today. Brandy Colbert weaves in very important issues within this young adult contemporary such as voter suppression, abuse of power from the police, mistreatment of black people throughout history, and the importance of voting. Everyone should read this book as soon as it comes out on July 7th!!!
