The Painted Drum
by Louise Erdrich
Took me a long time to finish this one, not because it's not good but I found the first part of the novel difficult to get through. I think I just found it difficult to figure out where the story was headed and what the nature or story of the drum was. When I got to the second part, where the history of the painted drum is explained, the novel really came alive for me, and it started to gather speed. Erdrich's done another wonderful job with this novel, interweaving several storylines in really ingenious and emotionally effective ways. The characters are, as ever, incredibly vivid and interesting, and I'm always so happy to spend time with them and to learn from them and experience Native American culture and history. I loved reading about Fleur Pillager's origins, her mother and where she came from, she's one of my favourite characters.
There's nothing like an Erdrich novel.
