This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and I did struggle through the first third or so. Once Voya was starting her task, it was easier to follow along. When there’s lots of characters to learn (I believe it’s 10 other people who live in the house with Voya) plus some futuristic slang to adapt to, plus learning a system of magic as well, it’s a lot to take in.
The futuristic aspect wasn’t my favorite because it was so similar to present day, just with slightly different terminology and I believe this takes place in 2040 which isn’t that far away time wise which makes it hard for me to buy into. The magic system was more interesting, though I could’ve done without the details of their bleeding.
I could have stood for better behavior on the part of every adult in this book, even after I give some grace because it’s a YA book. So many things they did were unforgivable from the perspective of a teenager.
All told, I did enjoy this book and I will read the second one at some point.
