How do I always manage to get sucked into a great book on a Sunday night before I have to show up at work early the next day? Idk but chat, it happened again and this time it was this book? Oh gosh, what do I even say? I loved every single thing about it. This is EO at her best. A slightly forbidden premise, forced proximity, sexual tension that could melt an entire ice capped mountain, and banter. The BANTER! I die!
Kit is a classic O’Roark FMC (the way she writes her female characters should be studied istg), bratty and abrasive and too smart for her own good, which makes the barbs she throws at Miller a thing of lethal beauty. And Miller the dear man, gives it right back. Not because he’s an asshole but because he actually enjoys Kit’s sharp tongue and even adores her for it. On the outside she might be a rich bitch with all the privilege that comes with wealth, but inside she’s just a big ol’ softie with a fierce love of family and a deep sense of compassion. And a painful past. Her growth through the harrowing journey up Kilimanjaro is beautifully done.
Miller is a wealthy charmer (I do love books when people are just rich enough), on the same trip as Kit, and more importantly, her sister’s ex boyfriend. Favorite trope alert! He might enjoy sparring with Kit, but boy is so down bad for her, and is her biggest champion and protector. Even as she’s busy protecting everyone around her. Whether it be little acts of service or grand gestures, I fell in love with every single one. No seriously, may this type of love attack me. Just kidding, I don’t have a sister’s ex waiting in the wings, but the rest at least.
The banter and slow simmering sexual tension makes for some fantastic fireworks when the idiots do become lovers, and these two are real horny, friends. But also exceedingly sweet and swoony. The perfect pairing.
Kit’s family is full of quirky, imperfect characters but her dad was one of my absolute favorites. I love when the author pulls off good parental figures, it gives me vintage SEP feels. I was reserving judgment about Maren, but as usual being a complicated EO heroine, she invokes mixed feelings and I can’t wait to see her get messy with Charlie.
