mariahreadit 's review for:
Iron and Magic
by Ilona Andrews
Wow, ok. I see how this is gonna go. 4.5 STARS
Since this is the first KD book that I've encountered that doesn't have a slew of gigantic reviews,
I think that's due to it only being out for a couple of months, so I'll try to expand a little more on it.
Also, can I just note that it's been less than a month since I put down Magic Bites and I have now finished every single KD book, short, novella, anthology and spin off there is.
It's safe to say this series captured my heart.
NOW FOR THE BOOK:
Iron and Magic brings back everyone's favorite villain (well, before Roland anyway - and before the Preceptor of The Iron Dogs went a little too dark)
This book does bring Hugh into a different light, it also fills in the gaps and clears up some things about him.
Is he now a good guy? Hmm, no, not really.
But I think the point of this book is that nothing is that black and white.
Speaking of black and white... Hugh d'Ambray is not the sole star of this show.
He shares the spotlight with Elara Harper, and this book benefited greatly from the alternating POV.
Now for our White Warlock. I was worried Elara would be a damnsel, or a manic pixie dream girl, but the Andrews duo delivered a strong, powerful, stubborn, ice queen after my own heart.
Elara's main focus is the safety of her people, known as The Departed - they've split from a larger group, which they now call The Remaining, and have been moving around ever since - which brings us to the arranged marriage situation.
Hugh needs a Castle to defend his people from, and food for said people.
Elara needs someone to defend her people from The Remaining and other threats.
There's a lot about Elara we don't know yet and I'm dddyyyiiiing to find out.
Three familiar and beloved faces from KD make an appearance.
Another couple not so beloved ones show up as well.
This is a must read before Magic Triumphs comes out.
They do state this could be read as a stand alone, but I think that's pushing it.
Apparently all three Iron Covenant books happen before KD Book 10, but they're conveniently "supposed to be read" as such: IC1, KD10, IC2, IC3.
Well, if that means book 2 and 3 are next on the list, I'm down!
