The Possibility of an Island
by Michel Houellebecq
Page 30: What a load of rubbish. A ridiculous story and a frustrating main character. What is this, the ramblings of some senile ol' pervert about his fantastic youth?
Page 50: I'm still on the fence, is this annoying or just deliberately offensive? Am I supposed to be mad? Intrigued? Entertained?
Page 75: Ok, I do admit it's got its moments. I still feel like throwing it out the window every few pages but I'll keep going a bit more, maybe it gets a bit better as you go along.
Page 100: Well I'm not crazy about the characters, and I'd definitely not invite them for tea, but they are consistent and believable. And the story's decent, maybe I'll go along with it for a few more pages.
Page 150: I should ask some friends about Houellebecq. I wonder if Maria has read this, maybe she could offer some opinions. Is this good or not? I'm not even sure why I'm enjoying it, but I kind of can't wait to get to the end.
Page 200: This is like a bowl of chilli that's too spicy for my tongue. It's good and I like it but the jalapeno burnt my tongue like 100 pages ago and now I feel like I'm missing out on some of the flavours. I'll still stuff my mouth with it, but now I'm plowing through because the damage was done.
Page 275: asdfq4htej5qg3-koznj){j[i389 can't think, gotta finish this.
Page 380 (like, the next day): WOW, what the heck was that!? That was quite good! It had a bit of philosophy, a bit of pornography, some social and cultural critique, a touch of meta, it was a bit romantic and a bit nostalgic, a bit adventurey and a bit sci-fi-ish. I should clear my schedule and read it again soon. Yeah, that was quite the ride, I'm putting it right back in the "to-read" stack.
