She is a good storyteller. The main characters were well developed. I got annoyed by extraneous details and stories that didn't really add to the story. I strongly disliked Zeke and Rose. But maybe that's a sign of a good storyteller...

The story didn't really seem to be heading anywhere...more just a rambling story of people's lives.

I did not like how she made those who believed in God and were opposed to evolution so stupid and opposed to basic science and scientific principles. There are plenty of people who both believe in God and are deeply interested in science. Maybe that's how men were back then but I find it hard to believe.

I would not have finished this book if I hadn't been reading it for a book club.
