New Moon by Ian McDonald
4.0

I had very little expectation from this going in, and I was solidly impressed. He almost turns his characters loose in this mechanically complete system he has built a setting and let's events play out as they will.

The sci-fi is hard. As hard as anyone can reasonably ask for. Hard enough that this book would fit easily into [a:James S.A. Corey|4192148|James S.A. Corey|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png]'s Expanse universe.

The intrigue and politics are well conceived and interestingly constructed. The structures of law, industry, finance and power are all fully realized and developed. They interact in ways which are both believable and logically sound.

The book is definitely setting driven, and not character driven. The characters all gain some depth over the course of the book, but it take some time. Early on they do resemble cardboard cut-outs, but this improves if you keep reading.

This is not the most engaging sci-fi I've ever come across, but it is worth your while.
