The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo

3.0

They say hindsight is 20/20 and in this case it definitely rings true. I’ve had Grisha Trilogy on my To Read list for what seems like forever but one book or another always managed to somehow slide its way in and cut the line.

This being a shorter book, I figured it would give a sneak preview of the world Bardugo created without taking up a whole lot of time and investment like a new trilogy sure would.

The Goods:

-Dark
-Brooding
-Moody
-A tad bit violent. (Well, admittedly, in some cases more then a tad)

The Bads:

-Not connected really to anything. Just stand alone fairy tales. (Think what Beadle the Bard is to Harry Potter)

-SHORT STORIES!!! U figure I will learn at some point. I know that short stories are just not my thing, and yet, I find myself sneaking in a book or two of them in every year just to “make sure”. Yep. Still not a fan of short stories.

In all fairness, I am also not a fan of poetry and yet a collection of Dickinson manages to slip into my hands every now and then almost religiously. Like I do it on purpose almost…

Overall though I thought these were very solid.
“The Witch of Duva” and “When Water Sings Fire” were my favorite from the collection, and I rate the an easy 4 stars each.

There’s something about grim witchery that is appealing to my morbid side.

And “When Water Sings Fire” was soo different I was rather captivated by it. At first thinking it was a “Little Mermaid” retelling, I changed my mind quickly when blood magic came into play.

Ayama and the Thorn Wood, which seems to be most people’s favorite I thought was too much like an old school fairy tale. Short, and very focused on the morality of choices, which is too reminiscent of just about any Grimm or Andersen’s stories to me.

The Soldier Prince was intriguing as well and a great premise reminiscing that of a nutcracker, because the main character is…well, a nutcracker. But entirely too short for my liking.

These were solid 3 stars.

The rest of the stories were ok but nothing that kept me excited, so a few 2 stars there.
Those was one with the Zombies, one with Animals and one with the water demon.

I’m going to have to stop procrastinating and get to the main series. (Although I have to admit I cheated and watched the show. Oops. Oh well).

I’d say if you like short stories/ dark fairy tales this is a solid one. If not, get right to the main series, don’t waste your time here.
