Howards End
by E.M. Forster
Margret is such a refreshing character when it comes to the heroines of classical literature. She has a strength and assertiveness to her that many female character of the time do not. I appreciated getting to see an intelligent, sensible novel where so often we see empty headed, weak ladies.
As for the story itself, it did have it's ups and downs, but the thing that caught my attention the most was the way the story really did revolve around the property of Howard's End. From the first few pages I felt the place was magical and ethereal in a way, and this feeling only became pronounced as the story went on. I loved watching the characters drawn back to it no matter how far they tried to get away from it.
My favorite part of the novel is the emphasis on family. The most important people in Margret's life are her siblings, no matter where life takes her, her heart belongs to them. Getting to see family at the center of a novel in this way was wonderful. They meant more to each other than anything else, and because of this they were able to overcome all the obstacles they are faced with.
Howard's End was a joy to read, and if you are a fan of classic literature, i recommend it.
